• Get gentle lip colour without using lipstick

Sometimes an occasion calls for just a hint of lip colour without the full effect of a super rich lipstick. Maybe it’s a hot summer day that’ll just melt away that matte lipstick you love to wear in winter, or you just happen to be in the mood for that natural no-makeup makeup look. It’s easy to still make your lips stand out even when using a lighter touch and different products. Try out these tricks for a subtly sexy pout:

Tinted lip balm

Do double duty with this product by both moisturising your lips and adding a hint of color to them at the same time. It’s also the best option when you want a bit of glamour to look radiantly healthy during active, outdoor things too, particularly as many have SPF.

Line and fill

Get a lasting kiss of colour on your lips by gently lining them and filling them in with the same liner. Blot with a tissue and then dab lip balm over your lips for even, subtle colour that has more staying power than just tinted lip balm yet won’t dry out as quickly as the liner would alone. Another option is to coat your liner-filled lips with clear or slightly pink-peach gloss. Blot once with a tissue to remove any excess gloss and extend the life of your lip colour.

Glossed up

Glosses have long been the go-to, easy product for subtle colour and lip-plumping shine without the commitment of wearing and re-applying lipstick as it fades throughout the day and night. Swipe on a layer of lip gloss in any sheer hue. Or use an opaque yet lip-toned gloss for an all-over color that looks just a bit more polished than a plain lip.

Lip stains

For super long-lasting yet subtle lip colour, dab on a dot of stain, patting it over both lips. Let the first application dry before applying a second coat if necessary. Use a lip balm or lip gloss on top of your lip stain to keep lips from drying out and to punch up the colour if necessary.

In a pinch

If you find yourself without a single product at hand, use an old trick the Victorians were fond of -- bite your lips! Biting your lips brings blood to them, deepening their colour, as does gently pinching them.
